The Voluntary Exit Offer covers about a quarter of the workforce, while the company plans $175 billion for AI infrastructure

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to 60,000 employees, about a quarter of its workforce, as AI spending climbs, TF finds.

Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the Voluntary Exit Offer on 26 October 2026. The offer is not a layoff notice. Staff choose whether to leave, and thestory isd thepressure behind that choicey.

Microsoft (@Microsoft) targets staff at vice president level and below in the US, Canada, India and the UK. Workers in data centre role, sas well asn sales and marketin,g are excluded. Emails went to eligible employees on the day of the announcement.

Reports say accepted offers carry benefits close to a standard severance package. The amounts and the response deadline have not been published. Coleman described the offer as a new choice, made with support.

The Money

Microsoft expects to spend $175 billion (about €156 billion) on AI infrastructure in 2026, CFO Amy Hood said on the July earnings call. Headcount stood at 223,000 at the end of June, down from 228,000 at the end of 2025. The buyout reaches about 27% of the workforce.

Staff cost is one lever the company controls while capital spending rises. Data centres, chips and power are fixed commitments. Salaries are the flexible line.

Cuts So Far

The offer follows a run of smaller moves. In May, Microsoft reported buyouts for about 8,750 retirement-age US employees, and more than 30% accepted. In July, the company cut 4,800 jobs, about 2% of its workforce, including many in Xbox.

Each step has grown. A voluntary route spares the company a layoff headline. Employees who stay still face pressure on roles AI tools can cover.

What Workers Weigh

A buyout hands people a choice with a clock on it. Staff must judge whether their team will shrink anyway, and whether a package beats a risky wait. Notice rules differ in India, the UK and Canada, so risk varies by country.

My take: Voluntary is a generous word for an offer made to a quarter of the company. Choice and supportmatterg, so I wouln’tt call the decision cruel. The message to staff is plain, though: AI spending comes first, and headcount follows. Microsoft should publish the terms, the deadline and the expected savings.

TF Summary: What’s Next

Employees will decide over the coming weeks. Acceptance rates will show how many roles Microsoft can remove without layoffs. Analysts will track whether savings offset the AI build-out.

MY FORECAST: Between 15,000 and 25,000 employees will accept the offer. Microsoft will follow with targeted layoffs by March 2027 if acceptance falls short. Rivals will copy the voluntary format.
