Starlink’s Interference on United Flights Remedied

Starlink Interference on United Airlines Flights Fixed — Fast Wi-Fi Returns

Adam Carter

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, recently experienced an issue causing interference on United Airlines flights. The issue briefly forced United to suspend Starlink Wi-Fi on certain jets. Now, after adjustments, United Airlines confirms the interference problem is mostly fixed. Passengers can expect Starlink’s fast in-flight internet to return soon.

What’s Happening & Why This Matters

Interference on Smaller Aircraft and Quick Resolution

United Airlines COO Toby Enqvist explains that the interference affected only their Embraer E175 planes. These smaller jets had Starlink antennas placed too close to pilot radio antennas. This proximity caused static interference between the systems, disrupting satellite internet service. United had to disable Starlink on some jets due to this problem.

The United and SpaceX teams worked to resolve the interference. Enqvist mentioned that the solution repositioned the antennas, creating sufficient distance between the Starlink dishes and the radio equipment. This physical separation resolved the static issue, allowing Starlink Wi-Fi to resume on affected planes. The problem does not affect larger aircraft, which have more space to install the technology safely.

Currently, 60 United jets have Starlink dishes installed. The airline plans to expand the service fleet-wide but has not revealed a complete timeline. Passengers using Starlink enjoy fast speeds, sometimes nearing 100Mbps downloads, enabling seamless streaming and browsing. MileagePlus members receive free access with some ads during flights.

The Passenger Experience

The resolution moves the airline closer to making high-speed satellite internet a standard feature on commercial flights. It also illustrates the challenges of new tech integrations with existing airplane systems. United’s quick response protects the passenger experience and reinforces Starlink’s promise of reliable global connectivity.

As Enqvist puts it, “We think the issue is behind us.”
