Report: Some AI Models Fabricate What They Don’t Know

Recent research suggests that as artificial intelligence (AI) models grow more advanced, they may be increasingly inclined to fabricate answers when unsure, rather than admitting they don’t know. A new study by researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de València examined various large language models (LLMs), such as BigScience’s BLOOM, Meta’s LLaMA, and OpenAI’s GPT series, to assess their accuracy and reliability in different subject areas like math, science, and geography.

The study, published in Nature, tested these models by asking them thousands of questions. Researchers categorized responses into three types: correct, incorrect, or avoidant (where the model didn’t attempt an answer). Surprisingly, while newer models handled more complex problems better than earlier versions, they were less transparent about their limitations. Unlike earlier models that openly admitted uncertainty or required more information, the newer versions tended to guess, often providing inaccurate responses—even to simpler questions.

For instance, the number of “avoidant” responses—where the model simply refuses to answer—has dramatically dropped in the latest versions. Researchers noted a disconnect between expectations and reality. They believed newer models would be better at avoiding answering questions outside their capabilities, but this was not the case. Instead, these models were more prone to confidently delivering incorrect answers when they were unsure.
