OpenAI Raises $11 Billion in Funding Round, Potentially Doubling

OpenAI Group PBC has successfully secured $11 billion in a funding round, a portion of which could expand significantly in the coming weeks, as sources disclosed to Bloomberg that investors transferred the funds to the company on November 6, 2026.

While the specific investors remain unnamed, speculation suggests that Microsoft Corp. could be among the backers, having contributed to several recent funding rounds, including the $122 billion raised in March alongside Nvidia Corp., Amazon.com Inc., and numerous other investors.

There are indications that OpenAI may seek to raise an additional $9 billion in this funding round, which is projected to value the company at $1.25 trillion. If achieved, this valuation might position OpenAI to surpass Anthropic PBC’s market capitalization.

Anthropic is aiming for a valuation of $1.5 trillion in its forthcoming initial public offering (IPO). However, some of its investors reportedly view this target as overly ambitious. According to the Wall Street Journal, one shareholder has suggested targeting a valuation closer to $1 trillion instead.

Recent quarterly reports indicate that Anthropic’s revenue surged by 1,127% year-over-year in the third quarter, while OpenAI closed the same quarter with a net annualized revenue of $50 billion, marking a substantial 77% increase year-over-year. This growth was largely fueled by the company’s enterprise operations, which experienced over a twofold increase in sales.

On November 2, OpenAI introduced a new addition to its business portfolio, the GPT-6 Cyber, designed to excel in cybersecurity tasks compared to its previous general-purpose model, GPT-6 Astra. This powerful new tool enabled OpenAI engineers to identify 948 Linux exploits and detect 81 high-severity zero-day vulnerabilities in Firefox.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman shared that the company faced a growth stall in the first half of the year, but saw acceleration following the launch of GPT-5.6 Sol in June, which preceded the release of GPT-6 Astra. He noted that OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work productivity application, along with its coding tools, contributed to this renewed momentum.

OpenAI is planning to go public in 2027, and this latest funding will support its extensive infrastructure investments leading up to the IPO. Reports indicate that the company currently holds over $665 billion in chip and data center commitments. To mitigate long-term hardware costs, OpenAI has developed a custom inference accelerator in collaboration with Broadcom Inc.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is set to initiate its own IPO preparations, with plans to file as early as next week and aims for a public offering before Thanksgiving.
