Apple confirms an inner-display issue on a small number of units, but the cause remains open.
TF reporting found the making of a new scandal: Crackgate. Crackgate struck the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable, as owners post cracked inner screens.
Apple (@Apple) has confirmed a fault on some units. Nobody outside the company knows how many.
What’s Happening & Why It Matters
What Owners are Posting
The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 (about €1,779) and pairs a 7.6-inch folding inner display with a 5.4-inch outer screen. The phone reached China hours before the US on 23 October 2026. Photos on Reddit and the MacRumors forums soon showed damage near the hinge. Many show a line of bright pixels along one side of the inner panel.

The best-documented case comes from an Australian owner. The screen failed after about six hours of use and fewer than 20 openings, with no earlier damage. He said he felt something near the hinge, then heard a crack. An Apple Store swapped the phone on the spot.
What Apple Has Said
Apple confirmed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman a problem with the inner display on a “small number of iPhone Duo units”. Owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple gave no cause, no count and no production range.
MacRumors says hinge failures from normal use fall under the one-year warranty. Buyers get a two-week return window.
Design Flaw or Bad Batch?
Every reported crack is at the hinge, the part which bends with each opening. The pattern fits two very different stories. A design flaw would affect every unit and force a redesign. A manufacturing defect would strike some batches and be simpler to fix.
The evidence for either story is thin. One YouTuber, CuriousHagi, broke a Duo by bending the phone backwards on purpose. A teardown points at the hinge, though the source is unclear. One claim says a store technician blamed a day-one manufacturing error; Apple has not confirmed the claim.. Photos from demonstration units in China add to the noise, because the history of each unit is unknown.
A Small Number Still Counts
Social media reports are a sliver of the phones sold. Foldables punish rough handling, and plenty of buyers are new to them. Even so, Apple sells on durability and sets a high bar for itself. TF previewed Apple’s next launch event in Apple Pro and Tell Event on 28 October Brings a Touchscreen MacBook Pro.
My take: Apple’s wording is careful, and the replacement offer is right. A first-generation foldable from any maker carries risk, and first buyers know the deal. Silence on cause will not hold for long. If failures keep appearing at the same spot, Apple must publish a fix, a batch range or a design change. Otherwise buyers will wait for the second generation.

TF Summary: What’s Next
Teardown firms and repair shops will test the hinge in the coming days. Apple will collect failed units and may widen its statement. Buyers inside the return window will weigh keeping a $1,999 phone against swapping or refunding the handset.
MY FORECAST: Apple will name a manufacturing cause and a serial range within a month. Failure reports will stay below 1% of units. A revised hinge will arrive in the second-generation iPhone Duo.
