For seven years, rumours called it the iPhone Ultra. Apple called it the Duo. It opens into something close to an iPad mini, takes an Apple Pencil, and undercuts every price prediction analysts made — because Apple ate the margin to get there.
Apple revealed its first foldable iPhone Wednesday at the Steve Jobs Theatre, closing out seven years of speculation with a name almost nobody predicted. The iPhone Duo starts at $2,000 for 256GB and climbs to about $3,000 for 2 TB. Every credible leak through August pointed to “iPhone Ultra.” Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman broke the actual name hours before the keynote. The event marked John Ternus‘s first as CEO, and Apple filled it out with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and two new AirPods 5 models.
What’s Happening & Why It Matters
iPhone Duo: From Squat Foldable to Open iPad mini
The Duo uses a book-style hinge, unfolding from a 5.5-inch cover display into a 7.8-inch inner screen at roughly iPad mini proportions. Two rear cameras are on the outside, both 48-megapixel, alongside a 12MP front camera. Inside: Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and C2 modem, a magnetic hinge system, and — unexpected for a phone — Apple Pencil support.

AppleInsider’s own reporting calls the Duo “packed with features and compromises,” and the compromises are real. Touch ID returns, replacing Face ID, because Apple couldn’t fit the sensor array into a display engineered to minimise its crease. There’s no telephoto lens. Colours are limited to dark blue and white at launch. Shipping starts in October, with limited supply expected.
Duo Pricing: $2,000 Entry
Here’s the detail worth pausing on. Analysts had predicted a $2,500 starting price. Apple came in $500 under that, and Gurman reported the reason: Apple sacrificed profit margin to hit the number and drive demand. Given the memory shortage TF covered in RAMageddon Hits MacBook Air Supply as Chip Shortage Deepens, absorbing rising component costs rather than passing them along is an aggressive choice for a first-generation product in a category Apple has never sold into before.

The name carries its own baggage. Microsoft used “Duo” for the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2. Google used it for a now-dead video calling app. Apple used it for a line of PowerBooks back in 1995. Choosing a name three competitors have already worn suggests Apple wanted the hardware description — two screens — over any premium-tier signal like “Ultra” would have carried.
A20 Pro: 40% Faster, Improved Cooling
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max headline Apple’s more conventional lineup, both running the A20 Pro. Apple claims a 40% speed increase over the previous generation, paired with a redesigned thermal system that’s larger and better at dissipating the heat that performance generates. That thermal redesign isn’t incidental — sustained on-device AI workloads generate heat a phone chassis struggles to shed.
Camera work centres on a variable aperture main lens, which AppleInsider described while flagging an obvious concern: the mechanism “looks real fragile.” The Dynamic Island displays up to three Live Activities, up from one. Apple also introduced Reference Image, a system giving iPhone photos verifiable evidence they came from a physical camera — a direct answer to the AI-generated image problem TF has tracked across EU Makes AI Labels Mandatory for Realistic Synthetic Content.
Pre-orders begin Saturday, 12 September. Apple avoided a 11 September start date.
Watch Series 12: Listens All Day
The Apple Watch Series 12 brings back a ceramic case option and pairs with watchOS 27 for a new health feature: Readiness, an app assessing whether your body is prepared for exertion on a given day. Apple also upgraded the health sensing system, though it hasn’t detailed which sensors changed.

The more interesting addition is Siri Recap. The Watch listens throughout your day, building a summary of what happened around you — conversations included. Apple claims the device forgets the audio the moment it understands the context, never producing a transcript and never storing or recording sound. That’s an unusual privacy architecture, and it’ll draw scrutiny because “listens all day” and “doesn’t retain anything” are claims most users will struggle to verify independently. The Ultra 4 gets better battery life alongside the same AI features.

AirPods 5: Live Translation at a Lower Price
Apple shipped two AirPods 5 models — one with a wireless charging case, one without — starting at a lower price than the previous generation. Both deliver five hours of battery life and add live translation, plus improved active noise cancellation.
Live translation in earbuds isn’t new as a category, but Apple building it into its highest-volume audio product moves the feature from novelty to default. The split model strategy, with a cheaper non-wireless-charging option, suggests Apple is chasing volume at the entry point rather than pushing everyone toward a single premium tier.

TF Summary: What’s Next
The iPhone Duo ships in October, with supply expected to be limited at launch. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max pre-orders open Saturday, 12 September. Apple hasn’t confirmed whether a smaller Apple Pencil will accompany the Duo, or whether existing Apple Pencils will work. Apple stock closed at $313.10, down $3.12 on the day. Full reviews and teardowns will determine whether the Duo’s variable aperture and hinge mechanism hold up under real use.
MY FORECAST: Expect the Duo to sell out its initial run regardless of the $2,000 entry price — genuine novelty from Apple after seven years of anticipation guarantees early demand, and constrained supply guarantees the sellout headline. Touch ID replacing Face ID is the compromise reviewers will hammer hardest, since it’s the one feature regression Apple can’t frame as a deliberate design choice. The more interesting bet is Apple Pencil support. A foldable phone that accepts a stylus and opens to iPad mini dimensions isn’t competing with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. It’s competing with Apple’s own iPad mini, and Apple appears comfortable with that.
