AI & Jobs: Musicians and Advertisers Under Attack

AI & Jobs: Musicians and Advertisers Beware

Li Nguyen

Artificial intelligence is transforming the music and advertising industries in ways that are both exciting and challenging. AI-powered music generators, such as Suno and Udio, create songs from text prompts, offering new creative possibilities. Meanwhile, Meta (formerly Facebook) plans to launch fully AI-driven ad creation tools, transforming the way advertisers engage with their audiences. However, this surge in AI adoption is accompanied by tensions surrounding copyrights, artist rights, and ad quality. TF explores how AI is impacting music creators and advertisers.

What’s Happening & Why This Matters

The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against AI music platforms Suno and Udio. These services train AI models on vast libraries of existing songs, many of which are unlicensed, to generate new music, lyrics, and vocals that sound remarkably human.

RIAA claims the AI outputs closely resemble copyrighted music. The association initially sought $150,000 per infringing song. However, sources reveal that the music giants — Sony, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group — may accept licensing deals. These would include fees, equity shares, and artist compensation. Both sides prefer a settlement to lengthy litigation.

RIAA CEO Mitch Glazier told Bloomberg last year, “The music community has embraced AI, and we are partnering with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity that put artists and songwriters in charge.” Yet, the industry insists AI startups pay for the right to use music in training or generation.

In fact, Universal Music extended licensing agreements with Meta last year. The deal allows social media users on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to use licensed songs, while artists receive fair compensation.

Even YouTube reportedly negotiated with Sony, Warner, and Universal to license copyrighted music for AI training purposes. This reflects the growing need to balance AI innovation with the protection of creative rights.

Meta Plans Fully AI-Generated Ads

Meta is developing an AI-powered ad creation platform. The tool guides advertisers through every step, from ideation to publishing. An advertiser could upload a product image, and then AI creates a tailored photo, text, or video ad, targeted by location and audience.

For example, users in snowy areas might see an ad for a car driving up a mountain, while urban dwellers receive an ad featuring cityscapes. Meta’s goal is to combine its massive data trove with AI to boost ad relevance and help small to mid-sized businesses maximize impact.

Advertising drives over 97% of Meta’s revenue in 2024. CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls this “a redefinition of the category of advertising.” However, questions remain about whether fully AI-generated content can maintain quality and authenticity without human input.

TF Summary: What’s Next

AI is pushing boundaries in music and advertising by creating new opportunities while challenging traditional rights and standards. The coming years may see closer cooperation among content creators, AI developers, and platforms to create fair and sustainable ecosystems.

In music, expect more licensing models to emerge, allowing AI innovation without sidelining artists. For advertising, AI tools will become smarter and more personalized, though human creativity is still key to avoid bland or irrelevant campaigns.
