Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Alex Blania, provides users with a “World ID” based on iris scans as a means to combat online fraud.
Worldcoin’s Privacy Concerns and Controversy
Despite launching World ID to act as a “proof of personhood” and combat online scams and bots, the company is facing backlash over its collection of biometric data and questions about data protection. The project has faced similar scrutiny in Kenya and is under investigation in the UK, France, and Germany. World ID aims to establish users as unique individuals rather than bots, although it has raised privacy concerns. The project operates in 29 locations in Spain and claims to have registered 4 million users across 120 countries since launching in July 2023.
