Musk Pledges a SpaceX Share for Every Child in America

The 2027 gift would cost about $10.5 billion, and Musk has not said how shares will reach children

The Musk SpaceX share pledge, posted on 19 October, promises one share to every child in America next year. TF explains the cost, the open questions and the link to Anthropic’s fund.

Elon Musk posted on X early on 19 October 2026. He will give one SpaceX share to every kid in America next year. He called the gift “the first of many.” The post came hours after Anthropic announced a share plan.

Musk did not define “kid,” set eligibility rules or name a delivery date. He did not say which shares he will give. SpaceX trades on Nasdaq as SPCX and reports earnings on Tuesday.

The Cost

About 72 million US residents are under 18, according to Census Bureau figures. SPCX closed at $146.03 (€130) on Friday. The gift is worth about $10.5 billion (€9.3 billion).

An August SEC filing showed Musk held 6.42 billion shares on 30 June. The gift is about 1.1% of his stake. Forbes puts his net worth near $908.5 billion (€809 billion). SPCX rose 0.93% to $147.39 in pre-market trading on Monday.

The Trump Accounts Question

Sources disagree on the delivery route. No report says whether the shares would go into Trump Accounts, the tax-advantaged accounts for US children under 18. The Treasury Department created accounts for more than 60 millionchildren, according to Benzinga.

Michael and Susan Dell gave $6.25 billion (€5.6 billion), or $250 each for 25 million children. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell pledged shares worth about $320 million (€285 million) in July for more than 2 million children. Musk’s gift would top the Dell gift by about $4.25 billion.

Anthropic said on 18 October the company would commit 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund. Musk replied with a recommendation to give shares straight to the public, then pledged to do so. His rival AI business gives him a commercial interest in the debate. TF reviewed the fund in Anthropic Commits 5% of Shares to Public Benefit Fund as AI Consciousness Debate Grows.

My take: The cost is small for Musk, at about 1% of his net worth. The delivery will decide the pledge’s value. Custodial accounts, tax treatment and eligibility need answers before 2027. A direct share gift creates 72 million new SpaceX holders, which could reshape the shareholder base.

TF Summary: What’s Next

Musk must name the delivery vehicle, the age limit and the citizenship rules. SpaceX could address the pledge on its Tuesday earnings call. Treasury and the IRS may need guidance on stock gifts to minors. Other founders face pressure to match the pledge.

MY FORECAST: Musk will name the delivery route by early 2027. Treasury will issue guidance on share gifts to children. At least one more billionaire will announce a child share pledge within six months. SPCX trading volume will rise on each new detail.
