Starlink: Pays Brazilian Fine, Coming to United Airlines

Joseph Adebayo

Starlink, a satellite internet provider under Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has resolved its financial issues in Brazil by paying a substantial fine. This move clears the way for its continued operations in the country. At the same time, United Airlines has announced a partnership with Starlink to bring free in-flight internet to all its planes starting in 2025.

What’s Happening & Why This Matters

Starlink Resolves Legal Troubles in Brazil

Brazil’s Supreme Court had frozen the financial assets of Starlink and X (formerly known as Twitter) after imposing fines totaling over $3.2 million. The court found both companies liable, viewing them as part of the same “economic group” controlled by Elon Musk. X paid approximately $1.3 million, and Starlink covered the remaining $1.98 million. Following these payments, Brazil unfroze the assets, which included bank accounts, vehicles, and real estate.

The court had banned X last month due to concerns over its content moderation practices, which it believed were inadequate and allowed the spread of political misinformation harmful to Brazil’s democracy. Although X denied the allegations, the court’s decision led to a ban and the imposition of fines. The resolution of these payments has allowed Starlink to continue its services in Brazil.

Starlink Partners with United Airlines

In parallel, United Airlines announced a deal to equip all its aircraft with Starlink’s satellite internet service, providing passengers with free Wi-Fi on flights starting in 2025. This initiative represents a significant upgrade from the current in-flight internet services, which are often slow, unreliable, and costly. The new service will allow continuous connectivity from gate to gate, even during takeoff and landing, and will support streaming of video and games, as well as connections for multiple devices.

The installation will start in early 2025 and will take several years to complete across United’s fleet of over 1,000 aircraft. This agreement positions United Airlines as a leader in offering free, high-quality in-flight internet, setting a new standard for passenger connectivity.

TF Summary: What’s Next

Starlink’s payment of fines in Brazil has cleared a major legal hurdle, allowing it to continue operations in the country while maintaining a global footprint. At the same time, the partnership with United Airlines signals a bold expansion of Starlink’s services into aviation, promising to transform the in-flight internet experience for millions of travelers. The deal’s full implementation will take several years, but it marks a significant step in expanding access to high-speed internet in the skies. Future developments may include further partnerships with other airlines and potential enhancements to in-flight entertainment and connectivity services.
