Honda Recall 1.7M Vehicles Over ‘Sticky’ Steering Wheels

Joseph Adebayo

Honda is issuing a recall for 1.7 million vehicles due to a flaw in the steering system. This defect, which causes steering to become “sticky” and unresponsive, affects several models across the Honda lineup, including specific Acura models. The earliest instances of the issue trace back to early 2021. While no injuries have been linked to this flaw, Honda is acting preemptively to avoid potential incidents.

What’s Happening & Why This Matters

The steering issue originates from a manufacturing defect. Honda explains that environmental conditions such as heat and moisture, combined with production issues, have led to excessive friction between the worm wheel and worm gear, two vital parts in the steering system. The worm wheel’s spring also contributes to the problem by exerting undue pressure, resulting in “sticky” steering. Honda models affected by this issue include:

  • 2022–2025 Honda Civic (four-door, five-door, Type-R, and hybrid variants)
  • 2023–2025 Honda CR-V (regular, hybrid, and the fuel cell electric version)
  • 2023–2025 Honda HR-V
  • 2023–2025 Acura Integra (regular and Type S)

Honda initially received reports in 2021 and launched an internal investigation in November 2022. By March 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had also begun a probe into the steering complaints. Although Honda decided to recall the vehicles only recently, it had by then received 10,328 warranty claims related to the defect. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been reported.

Honda plans to notify affected owners starting next month. Due to the nature of the issue, a simple software fix won’t resolve it. Instead, Honda will replace the worm gear spring and ensure adequate lubrication for the affected parts to restore proper steering responsiveness.

TF Summary: What’s Next

Honda’s recall is proactive and precautionary to ensure driver safety. Owners of the impacted models should await direct contact from Honda, detailing the recall and scheduling the necessary repair appointments. The company’s swift action is dedication to maintaining customer trust and ensuring people’s safety. As the recall expands, Honda will review its manufacturing processes to prevent similar problems.
