Elon Musk will open-source Grok, the AI chatbot by xAI. The release will be this week. This comes just after suing OpenAI and accusing them of deviating from their open-source roots.

What’s Happening & Why This Matters

Musk founded OpenAI as opposition to Google, with aims to make technology freely available. After OpenAI went closed-source, Musk filed a lawsuit against them for maximizing profits for Microsoft.

The retaining of Grok follows a bigger trend. With xAi, Meta and Mistral all open-sourcing their chatbot codes.

Musk has always been a big advocator of open-source. Tesla has open-sourced a lot of its patents and X, aka Twitter, did the same with some of its algorithms last year.

Musk’s decision is a big one and only time will tell if the rest of the industry follows suit.
