Boom promotes Superpower gas turbines for AI power while the Overture jet slips
Boom’s data centre turbine plan arrives as United Airlines’ chief executive says the Overture airliner will miss 2029. TF read the coverage. Boom entered the AI power race in December 2025, so the news is United’s doubt and a lost customer.
What’s Happening & Why It Matters
United’s CEO Doubts the 2029 Date
Scott Kirby leads United Airlines, one of the first customers for Boom Supersonic (@boomaero). On the Office Hours: Business Edition podcast on 28 October 2026, he called 2029 Boom’s official timeline and said the airliner will arrive later.
Boom has not flown an Overture test aircraft, and no commercial airliner exists yet. Ars Technica reported the comments on 30 October 2026.
Superpower Turbines for AI Data Centres
Boom announced Superpower in December 2025. The 42-megawatt natural gas turbine is based on the Symphony engine built for Overture and needs no water. On 22 October 2026, Boom revealed a $150 million (about €133 million) campus in Centennial, Colorado. The 200,000-square-foot site could create up to 500 jobs.
Boom plans first deliveries to data centre customers in mid-2027. Production targets are 25 turbines a year in 2028 and 50 a year by 2029. The company targets more than 2 gigawatts of Superpower capacity.

Crusoe Steps Back
Crusoe ordered 29 units for $1.25 billion (about €1.1 billion). Boom raised $300 million (about €267 million) on the deal. TechCrunch reported on 25 September 2026 that Crusoe dropped the plan. Crusoe still wants gas turbines, but chose GE Vernova units derived from aircraft engines, for about 1 gigawatt.
Boom has not named a replacement customer, Startup Fortune reports.
Sprint Core Links Jet and Turbine
Boom says the turbine work supports the Symphony engine. Its prototype Sprint Core is meant to power both Superpower and Symphony. Boom plans the first firing at the Colorado Air & Space Port before Thanksgiving.
Boom’s pitch to investors is turbine sales funding the jet. The pitch needs a customer to replace Crusoe.
My take: Boom treats data centre power as a revenue bridge to Overture. The plan is sensible on paper, because AI sites need on-site power and turbines are scarce. Losing the launch customer weakens the case, and Kirby’s comment weakens the airline story. Investors will watch the Sprint Core firing.
TF Summary: What’s Next
Boom needs a new turbine customer and a clean Sprint Core firing. United may confirm a later Overture date. Data centre developers will keep comparing Boom against GE Vernova and other turbine makers.
MY FORECAST: Sprint Core will fire before Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026. Boom will name a new turbine customer by mid-2027. Overture will not carry passengers before 2030.
