ASI Inc. Secures $325 Million in Series C Funding at $3 Billion Valuation
An artificial intelligence startup, ASI Inc., which specializes in creating complex models for air traffic and energy grids, has announced it has secured $325 million in a Series C funding round, elevating its valuation to an impressive $3 billion.
The funding round was led by Spark Capital, with participation from well-known firms such as Citadel Securities, Craft Ventures, Meritech Capital, Energy Impact Partners, and Andreessen Horowitz.
Previously known as Air Space Intelligence, ASI develops advanced models aimed at simulating physical realities and forecasting future scenarios. These capabilities enable customers to effectively plan and manage critical infrastructure operations in real time.
ASI serves a variety of sectors, including aviation, defense, and energy. The startup collaborates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and major airlines like United Airlines Inc. and Delta Air Lines Inc. to forecast air traffic conditions, facilitating efficient flight operations, reducing delays, and enhancing safety.
Furthermore, ASI partners with military branches, including the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, to provide AI-driven command-and-control software that assists in daily operations management. In the energy sector, it empowers grid operators to simulate operations and effectively prepare for demand surges.
According to ASI founder and Chief Executive Phillip Buckendorf, the future of economic growth relies on equipping operators of critical infrastructure with predictive capabilities to prevent failures. “While the broader tech ecosystem spent hundreds of billions teaching AI to manipulate words and generate text, ASI is deeply focused on AI systems that can manage and control physical assets,” he asserted. “This capital ensures ASI scales as America’s engine: the automated nervous system keeping the country running.”
The funding announcement follows a significant achievement for ASI. In June, the company secured an $875 million multiyear contract with the FAA to manage future air traffic across the nation using its AI platform, outperforming established competitors like Palantir Technologies Inc. and Thales SE, as reported by Bloomberg.
In its air traffic management role, ASI’s system integrates flight path data, real-time air traffic information, weather conditions, and controller staffing levels to predict congestion and devise strategies to mitigate delays. The FAA implemented this innovative software at Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C. last month and has plans for broader application across all major U.S. airports in the future.
This contract marks a significant milestone for ASI, making it one of only four tech companies to secure a federal contract of this magnitude since 2000. Since then, ASI has also landed another substantial contract with the U.S. Army, announced earlier this month, valued at $99 million for supplying AI software for its command-and-control program. Notably, National Grid USA Service Company Inc. is also among ASI’s clients, utilizing its software for planning purposes.
Looking ahead, ASI intends to utilize the new funding to further expand its presence in the aviation, defense, and energy sectors, and to explore new opportunities in logistics. The company also plans to enhance its research and engineering teams to advance the capabilities of its software solutions.
